How to release DHCP leases that are not in use from the SM5000 pool?

Issue

Is it okay to remove DHCP leases that are not in use any more from the SM5000 DHCP configuration?

Product Line

Pelco Video Management

Environment

  • Endura SM5000- All versions
  • Endura EE500- All versions

Cause

Devices fail to receive an IP address due to all of the leases being reserved, though not actually in use.

Resolution

By default the DHCP service on the SM5000 System Manager is configured to hand out DHCP leases for an infinite length of time. As devices are added and removed from the system the leases remain as assigned - called a reservation - by the DHCP service. Once all IP addresses have been reserved the DHCP service will no longer be able to hand out any addresses to new devices.

Two options are available to free up some of the invalid address assignments.

Option 1 - Change the default lease time for the DHCP service

  1. Open the web interface of the System Manager located at https://[IP address of SM5000]:10000
    example: https://192.168.5.10:10000
  2. Click Servers -> DHCP Server -> Edit Client Options button
  3. Change the Default lease time entry from infinite to your desired lease time (in seconds)
    example: 864000 seconds = 10 days
    * Do not set the length below three days (259200 seconds) as this may result in undesired behavior of the devices
  4. Click the radio button next to the Default lease time data input box
  5. Change the Maximum lease time entry from infinite to your desired lease time (in seconds)
    example 864000 seconds = 10 days
    * This value should be the same or slightly longer than step 3
  6. Click the radio button next to the Maximum lease time data input box
  7. Click Save
  8. Click Apply Changes button

Option 2 - Manually delete invalid entries

  1. Open the web interface of the System Manager located at https://[IP address of SM5000]:10000
    example:  https://192.168.5.10:10000
  2. Click Servers -> DHCP Server -> List Active Leases button
  3. Click List all active and expired leases button
  4. Click on the IP address to be deleted in the List Active Leases output to delete the address reservation from the DHCP scope.
