How to view raw video files from a defective DX8000/DX8100 Hybrid Video Recorder (HVR)?

Product Line

Pelco Video Management

Environment

  • DX8000 Series
  • DX8100 Series
  • .pck, .pev, .pix file

Cause

View video files on a hard drive that was removed from a DX8000 or DX8100 DVR.

Resolution

Depending on what has failed, there are two ways this can be accomplished.

Using the DX8100 Client software:

The DX8100 Client can be used to view video files copied from a DX8000/DX8100 data drive to other media (USB hard drive..etc.).  This is usually done if you have a failed DX8000/DX8100 system or are replacing a system but the data drives are in working order.

Where can I download the DX8100 Client software?

  1. The PDB folder located on the DX8100's data drives must be copied completely intact with all of the original data accounted for.
  2. Open the DX8100 Client and click the Search button , then click the File > Backup Search option.
  3. The Backup data list box will open, click Browse and navigate to the PDB folder copied from the DX8100 recorder then click OK.

  4. This will load the video in the client software, drag-n-drop cameras into the display windows, then use the date/time and playback features to view the video.

  5. If a video clip from this backup file is needed, it can be exported using Export feature in the DX8100 client software.

Notes: The DX8100 client is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP only. Also supports the playback of video files from DX8000 recorders.

Using the DX8000 Backup Viewer v1121:

This option works for hard drive failures or when data is no longer intact in the PDB folder. Works for both DX8000's/DX8100's.

  1. Locate the files with extensions .pck.pev and .pix which have the same modified time stamp in Windows, these files must be together.

  2. Open the DX8000 Viewer, drag-n-drop one of the .pck,.pev,.pix files into the viewer.

  3. If there are multiple cameras recorded in the same file a Select Channel dialog box will open, simply select a channel.

  4. Press OK to play video.

Notes: Compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP.  Plays the video back at realtime speed, works with DX8100 video files also.  The Backup Viewer cannot, however, playback video that has been recorded from IP cameras within a DX8100 hybrid system.

Note: While it is possible to view video this way, it is not the proper way to export video from a DX8000/DX8100. To properly export video from a DX8000/DX8100 please follow the following article: How to export video on the DX8100 Hybrid Video Recorder?
