When attempting to play back an AVI file exported from your WS5000 software, you receive the following error message:
Pelco Video Management
WS5000 Advanced Management Software, all versions
WS5200 Advanced Management Software, all versions
Windows XP, all releases
Windows Vista, all releases
Older Pelco cameras and encoders encoded their video into the MPEG-4 Part 2 format, usually referred to simply as MPEG-4. Newer cameras encode their video into the MPEG-4, Part 10 format (commonly referred to as H.264). Whenever you export AVI clips in the WS5000 software, the WS5000 program downloads the video in question from the recorder (such as an NVR5100 or NSM5200) as an MPEG-4 or H.264 stream and then encapsulates that video stream into an AVI container (that is, a file). It then saves that AVI file to a destination you specify, such as your hard drive or a compact disk.
Windows XP comes with Windows Media Player 8. This version, by default, cannot play either H.264 or MPEG-4 AVI files. Likewise, Windows Vista comes with Windows Media Player 11, which does not support such files, either. Windows 7 introduced Windows Media Player 12, which can play both. However, Media Player 12 is not available for either Windows XP or Vista.
Possible resolutions include the following:
- Export the video clip as a PEF file, which can then be opened using the Pelco Export Player. Instructions for doing so can be found on page 72 of the WS5200 Software Operation Manual.
- Download a third-party video player such as VLC and open the exported AVI file in that program.
