Effective Storage for DSSRV units.

Issue

  • I just bought a DSSRV-xx-xx unit and I want to know what my effective storage is for this unit; NOT the total amount I purchased.
  • What is the effective storage area/space for the DSSRV units?
  • How much storage can I expect to actually get out of a DSSRV-xx-xx unit? I know the total amount, but, how much storage space do I actually get to use?

Cause

Spec Sheet C4693 does NOT account for formatting information to impact total storage for any one unit.

Resolution

THESE FIGURES ARE NOT HARD-SET NUMBERS AND ARE "AT-BEST" FIGURES AND DO NOT, IN ANY WAY, REFLECT ACTUAL REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS, AS THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING THE PRECISE AND ACCURATE EFFECTIVE STORAGE OF ANY ONE SYSTEM ONCE INSTALLED. HOWEVER, THESE ESTIMATIONS ARE EXTREMELY CLOSE TO WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AFTER ORDERING A BRAND NEW DSSRV SYSTEM.

NON-RAID5 DSSRV units:

  • Windows HDD formatting = ~0.25TB, or, 250GB, per HDD
  • Windows 7 64-bit OS Partitioning is 50GB (partitioning does NOT match that of the RAID5 DSSRV)
  • 5120MB MINIMUM PER ACTIVE STORAGE DRIVE LOCATION/LETTER for DS to Read/Write effectively within the Storage Partition
     

DSSRV-005 - 500GB total - 250GB for formatting information = (250GB of Storage - 50GB for OS) = (200GB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) = ~194.88GB of Effective Storage

DSSRV-030 - 3.0TB total - 250GB for formatting information = (2.75TB of Storage - 50GB for OS) = (2.70TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) = ~2.69488TB of Effective Storage

DSSRV-060 - 6.0TB total - (250GB * 2HDD for formatting information) = (5.5TB of Storage - 50GB for OS) = (5.45TB - [5120MB * 2HDD for DS Read/Write = 10.240GB] ) = ~5.43976TB of Effective Storage

DSSRV-090 - 9.0TB  total - (250GB * 3HDD for formatting information) = (8.25TB of Storage - 50GB for OS) = (8.20TB - [5120MB * 3HDD for DS Read/Write = 15.360GB]) = ~8.18464TB of Effective Storage

DSSRV-012 - 12.0TB  total - (250GB * 4HDD for formatting information) = (11.0TB of Storage - 50GB for OS) = (10.95TB - [5120MB * 4HDD for DS Read/Write = 20.480GB]) = ~10.92952TB of Effective Storage

RAID5 DSSRV units:

  • One 3TB HDD is lost immediately for RAID5 Parity information - this is OFF the TOTAL amount of storage quoted for the system
  • Windows 7 64-bit OS Partitioning is 40GB (partitioning does NOT match that of the NON-RAID5 DSSRV)
  • ~0.286TB for RAID Parity information per HDD in the RAID5 configuration
  • 5120MB MINIMUM PER ACTIVE STORAGE DRIVE LOCATION/LETTER for DS to Read/Write effectively within the Storage Partition

DSSRV-RD-090 - (9.0TB total - 3.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Two total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 6.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data  = (6TB total storage - 40GB for OS) = 5.96TB for Storage -> (Two total HDD * ~0.286TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~0.572TB (total lost for RAID5 formatting of the two 3.0TB HDD) -> then, (5.96TB - 0.572TB for RAID5 formatting) to = (~5.388TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~5.38288TB of Effective Storage.

DSSRV-RD-120 - (12.0TB total - 3.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Three total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 9.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data = (9TB total storage - 40GB for OS) = 8.96TB for Storage -> (Three total HDD * ~0.286TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~0.858TB total lost for formatting of the three 3TB HDD -> then, (8.96TB - 0.858TB for formatting) to = (~8.102TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~8.09688TB of Effective Storage.

DSSRV-RD-150 - (15.0TB total - 3.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Four total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 12.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data = (12TB total storage - 40GB for OS) = 11.96TB for Storage -> (Four total HDD * ~0.286TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~1.144TB (total lost for RAID5 formatting of the four 3.0TB HDD) = then, (11.96TB - 1.144TB for RAID5 formatting) to = (~10.816TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~10.81088TB of Effective Storage.

DSSRV-RD-180 - (18.0TB total - 3.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Five total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 15.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data = (15TB total storage - 40GB for OS) =  14.96TB for storage  = (Five total HDD * ~0.286TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~1.43TB (total lost for RAID5 formatting of the five 3.0TB HDD) = then, (14.96TB - 1.43TB for RAID5 formatting) to = (~13.53TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~13.52488TB of Effective Storage.
