Effective Storage for DSSRV2 units

Issue

  • I just bought a DSSRV2-xx-xx unit and I want to know what my effective storage is for this unit; NOT the total amount I purchased.
  • What is the effective storage area/space for the DSSRV2 units?
  • How much storage can I expect to actually get out of a DSSRV2-xx-xx unit? I know the total amount, but, how much storage space do I actually get to use?

Cause

Spec Sheet C4014 does NOT account for formatting information to impact total storage for any one unit.

Resolution

THESE FIGURES ARE NOT HARD-SET NUMBERS AND ARE "AT-BEST" FIGURES AND DO NOT, IN ANY WAY, REFLECT ACTUAL REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS, AS THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING THE PRECISE AND ACCURATE EFFECTIVE STORAGE OF ANY ONE SYSTEM ONCE INSTALLED. HOWEVER, THESE ESTIMATIONS ARE EXTREMELY CLOSE TO WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AFTER ORDERING A BRAND NEW DSSRV SYSTEM.

NON-RAID5 DSSRV2 units:

  • Windows HDD formatting(4TB) = ~0.37TB, or, 370GB, per HDD
  • Windows HDD formatting(500GB) = ~30GB per HDD
  • Windows 7 64-bit OS is located on a seperate 120GB SSD 
  • 5120MB MINIMUM PER ACTIVE STORAGE DRIVE LOCATION/LETTER for DS to Read/Write effectively within the Storage Partition
     

DSSRV2-005 - 500GB total - 30GB for formatting information  = (470GB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) = ~465GB of Effective Storage

DSSRV2-040 - 4.0TB total - (0.37TB for formatting information) = 3.63TB of Storage  = (3.63TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) = ~3.62TB of Effective Storage

DSSRV2-080 - 8.0TB total - (0.37TB * 2HDD for formatting information) =7.26TB of Storage  = (7.26TB - [5120MB * 2HDD for DS Read/Write = 10.240GB] ) = ~7.25TB of Effective Storage

DSSRV2-120 - 12.0TB  total - (0.37TB * 3HDD for formatting information) = 10.89TB of Storage  = (10.89TB - [5120MB * 3HDD for DS Read/Write = 15.360GB]) = ~10.87TB of Effective Storage

DSSRV2-160 - 16.0TB  total - (0.37TB * 4HDD for formatting information) = 14.52TB of Storage = (14.52TB - [5120MB * 4HDD for DS Read/Write = 20.480GB]) = ~14.49TB of Effective Storage

RAID5 DSSRV2 units:

  • One 4TB HDD is lost immediately for RAID5 Parity information - this is OFF the TOTAL amount of storage quoted for the system
  • Windows 7 64-bit OS is located on a seperate 120GB SSD not inlcuded in the RAID 
  • ~0.37TB for RAID Parity information per HDD in the RAID5 configuration
  • 5120MB MINIMUM PER ACTIVE STORAGE DRIVE LOCATION/LETTER for DS to Read/Write effectively within the Storage Partition

DSSRV2-120RD - (12.0TB total - 4.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Two total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 8.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data  = 8TB total storage  -> (Two total HDD * ~0.37TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~0.74TB (total lost for RAID5 formatting of the two 3.0TB HDD) -> then, (8TB - 0.74TB for RAID5 formatting) to = (~7.26TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~7.25TB of Effective Storage.

DSSRV2-160RD - (16.0TB total - 4.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Three total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 12.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data = 12TB total storage  -> (Three total HDD * ~0.37TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~1.11TB total lost for formatting of the three 3TB HDD -> then, (12TB - 1.11TB for formatting) to = (~10.89TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~10.88TB of Effective Storage.

DSSRV2-200RD - (20.0TB total - 4.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Four total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 16.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data = 16TB total storage  -> (Four total HDD * ~0.37TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~1.48TB (total lost for RAID5 formatting of the four 3.0TB HDD) = then, (16TB - 1.48TB for RAID5 formatting) to = (~14.52TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~14.51TB of Effective Storage.

DSSRV2-240RD - (24.0TB total - 4.0TB for Parity HDD) -> Five total HDDs WORTH OF SPACE remain to make a total of 20.0TB available after the removal of the Parity data = 20TB total storage  -> (Five total HDD * ~0.37TB of RAID formatting space per HDD) to = ~1.85TB (total lost for RAID5 formatting of the five 3.0TB HDD) = then, (20TB - 1.85TB for RAID5 formatting) to = (~18.15TB - 5120MB for DS Read/Write) =  ~18.14TB of Effective Storage.
